The only thing off about And Then There Were None is its original title. I’ve seen it dismissed as having dated poorly, but for me this is a funny, witty and sharply observed Christie classic. Surrounded by villagers who all have an axe to grind with Colonel P, Miss M uses her famous nous to eliminate seven suspects. Famous largely for being Miss Marple’s first appearance in a novel, The Murder at the Vicarage sees thoroughly disagreeable chap Colonel Protheroe murdered, Cluedo-style, in his library, with a gun. ![]()

![]() ![]() As Christensen struggled with the disease, the question "How do you measure your life?" became more urgent and poignant, and he began to share his insights more widely with family, friends, and students. ![]() The speech was memorable not only because it was deeply revealing but also because it came at a time of intense personal reflection: Christensen had just overcome the same type of cancer that had taken his father's life. He used examples from his own experiences to explain how high achievers can all too often fall into traps that lead to unhappiness. Drawing upon his business research, he offered a series of guidelines for finding meaning and happiness in life. He was abused by a priest and his family let it slide. When he was young he was forced to perform oral sex on an older boy. His autobiography Pryor Convictions: And Other Life Sentences read almost like a history of domestic abuse. He married five different women, and two of them twice. An actual brothel, so that might go some way to explaining both his love for women, and his disregard for them. His life was never easy, even when he was the hottest commodity in Hollywood, and life should have been easy, he fucked things up and made it extremely difficult. But he was also helplessly dedicated to drugs for most of his life. The man was an outstanding performer, there’s no two ways about it. Richard Pryor’s ability and success was of course enviable. Samuel Delany's description of the ideal telepathic universal language in Babel 17 shows us humans' dream to be like God by showing to us the new process of communication in the factual interplanetary environment.
